CHOKE DAMP.

Another narrow escape from choke damp: Rob Isherwood descended on a ladder into a well on J. W. Cowing's farm last Monday. At a depth of 18 feet he says "things commenced to reel and there wasn't any breath handy." In climbing up his grip nearly gave way several times and he tumbled out upon the ground nearer dead than alive. Only a few weeks ago Loren Stone had a similar experience. We hope these two examples will be sufficient. Lower a lighted lamp or your neighbor's cat into the well before you venture. If the lamp goes out or the cat dies there's deadly gas present, which can be removed by rapidly raising and lowering a bucket for a few minutes.
