Minnesota Tales

The Rothsay Record, August 21, 1897, p. 1

AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE.

Mat Strachan has several well developed bumps on his head which would puzzle a phrenologist to size up - and thereby hangs a tale. It will be a month tomorrow since Frank Crandall and T. Cavanaugh were held for burglarizing Cole & Pierce's store. They had been exceptional prisoners and were allowed the freedom of the corridors, and were given wood for a fire recently, as the floor was damp. Sheriff Burau was called away Tuesday and they knew it, so decided to make a break for liberty, even being ready to commit murder in the attempt. When Mat started to lock them up last night, one went into his cell and the other walked along beside Mat until opposite the other in the cell. Then he caught him and the other jumped out of his cell with a stick of wood and struck Mat over the head. The other also got a stick and took a turn at hitting him. They said they would kill him if he did not give up the keys, so he let them take them. They then ran out, but did not stop to lock the doors, only throwing the bars across them. The prisoners on the other side shouted and attracted the attention of the people in the neighborhood and Mat let himself out by reaching through and lifting the bars. A crowd soon gathered and the fellows were captured under the N. P. elevator within a half hour. It is not likely that they will enjoy any favors hereafter. - Breckenridge Telegram.
