Minnesota State Reform School Inmate Records

Currently, Only Those Inmates Enumerated In The
1885 Minnesota Census Are Included

KinSource has extracted records from the inmate books of the Minnesota State Reform School. These records are housed in the archives of the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul, Minnesota. Currently, only records for inmates that were enumerated at the school in the 1885 Minnesota Census (plus siblings) are transcribed. Names for all people referenced in each record are listed. A designation is given showing the relation of the person to the inmate in the particular record.

Records include some or all of the following information:
Inmate: inmate number, name, age, birthplace, education, physical description
Parents: father's name, mother's name, parents' nationality, miscellaneous notes
Crime: committment date, community that committed the inmate, charge, sentence, discharge information
Other: some records contain other information such as correspondence or information about escapes

NOTE: Not all records contain all of the above information. For example, in some cases where one or both of the parents were deceased, parents' names are missing. On the other hand, the name of a step-parent may be given.
