1910 St. Paul Street Layout

The following description of the street layout of the city of St. Paul should help you to locate a house number on St. Paul streets and avenues. It describes the general layout of streets and avenues in St. Paul. For streets and avenues that do not conform to this general layout, see the Street Index that is provided.

Mississippi River Division

The city of St. Paul is divided into two parts by the Mississippi River. The majority of St. Paul is located on the east of the river, with one ward, Ward 6, on the west side of the river.

St. Paul East of the Mississippi River

This portion of St. Paul is comprised of Wards 1-5 and 7-12. It contains downtown St. Paul, and is divided into east and west by Wabasha and Sylvan streets.

St. Paul - Downtown.

Northeast-Southwest Streets

The only numeric streets in the city of St. Paul originate in the downtown district. These streets run parallel to the Mississippi River and increase from 1 to 15, starting at the river. All downtown streets running northeast-southwest are divided into east and west by Wabasha St. Streets west of Wabasha are given a West (W.) designation, for example, College Av. W. Streets east of Wabasha are given an East (E.) designation, for example, E. 7th St. House numbers start at 1 at Wabasha and increase as the streets progress east and west.

Northwest-Southeast Streets

Streets running northwest and southeast in downtown St. Paul are named streets. House numbers on these streets start at 1 at the river and increase as the streets progress northwest.

St. Paul - West Side.

The west side of St. Paul extends from Wabasha and Sylvan streets to the western city limits.

East-West Streets

Streets on the west side of St. Paul that run east and west, and exist on both sides of Wabasha and Sylvan Sts., are given a West (W.) designation, for example, Geranium St. W. House addresses on east-west streets start at 1 at Wabasha or Sylvan and increase as the streets progress west.

North-South Streets

On the west side of St. Paul, north-south streets are divided by Summit Avenue. House numbers north of Summit Avenue start at 1 at Summit Avenue and increase as the streets progress north. House numbers south of Summit Avenue start at 1 at Summit Avenue and increase as the streets progress south.

St. Paul - East Side.

The east side of St. Paul extends from Wabasha and Sylvan streets to the eastern city limits.

East-West Streets

Streets on the east side of St. Paul that run northeast-southwest and east-west, and exist on both sides of Wabasha and Sylvan Sts., are given an East (E.) designation, for example, Nevada Av. E. House addresses on east-west streets start at 1 at Wabasha or Sylvan, and increase as the streets progress east.

North-South Streets

House numbers on streets running straight north and south increase in number as the streets progress north.

St. Paul West of the Mississippi River

This portion of St. Paul contains Ward 6.

Northeast-Southwest Streets

This area of St. Paul has a series of streets and avenues that run northeast and southwest, paralleling the river. These streets start at the river with Water Street and are divided into east and west at Wabasha street. Streets east of Wabasha use an East (E.) designation, for example, Fillmore Ave. E. Streets west of Wabasha use a West (W.) designation, for example, Chicago Av. W. House numbers start with 1 at Wabasha and increase as the streets go southwest or northeast.

Northwest-Southeast Streets

These streets are cross streets to the above mentioned (northeast-southwest) streets and progress from the river to the southeast. These streets start with Belle St. on the west end and end with Rutland St. on the east end. House numbers on these streets start at 1 at the river and increase as the streets go southeast.

North-South Streets

A large number of streets in Ward 6 run directly north and south. These streets start with Beaver St. on the west end and end with Lamprey St. on the east end. House numbers on these streets increase as the streets go south.

East-West Streets

Streets running directly east and west in Ward 6 are divided by Goff Avenue. Streets east of Goff use an East (E.) designation, for example, Augusta St. E. Streets west of Goff use a West (W.) designation, for example, Robie Av. W. These streets start with Annapolis St. on the southern border of the city limits and progress north to Morrison St. House numbers start at 1 at Goff and increase as these streets progress east or west.
