PREPARATION OF ELKS
THEY SHOW THAT AN EXTENSIVE DIVERSION IS COMING.
If anyone wishes to obtain an idea of the preparations which are being made for the coming exposition and carnival he should take a stroll up Cedar street from Ninth, where the main arch is located. He will be readily convinced that St. Paul and the Northwest have never before had a more entertaining event presented to them. Reports indicate that the number of visitors will equal any festival period in the city's history.
In addition to the attractions of the exposition and the Midway, with its ten star exhibitions, the whole business part of town will be gaily decorated.
Arrangements for the opening day parade, June 18, are being made on a gigantic scale and it seems reasonably certain that business will be generally suspended for half of the opening day.
The gate will open at 12, noon, each week day, and close at midnight, the Midway being in full blast for four hours each afternoon and the same number of hours in the evening.
In addition to the electric illumination, a large search light will be located at the junction of Cedar street and Central avenue, which will brightly illuminate the grounds and German village.
Assemblyman-elect E. H. Whitcomb announced to the Elks' carnival committee yesterday, that at his first opportunity he would introduce in the council a resolution making June 18, the date of the opening of the street fair, a holiday. The first day will be one of the star attractions of the summer carnival, and will be marked by a parade of civic and military organizations.
Every business house of standing in the city has agreed to hang out decorations for the carnival. These will be hung principally on the Saturday preceding the opening. All exhibitors must have their displays in shape and ready for inspection by 10 o'clock on the day of opening. Demands for space are ample, and several have come from long distances. One of the recent contracts was made to a firm in Lexington, Ky.
