"MADAMES" TO MOVE
The Northern Pacific Gives Orders to Renovate 1st St S.
The "madames" must move. First st S is to be regenerated and renovated.
The information comes to THE JOURNAL today from unquestioned authority that the houses of ill-fame on 1st st S are all to be wiped out. The Northern Pacific Railroad Company, which owns most of the property, has given orders to its rental agents in this city to rent the houses no longer. Proper time, of course, will be accorded the "madames" to move out. Some of them have already anticipated the event by buying property on the East side of the river. Hattie Brush, for example, has only lately acquired a valuable lot on Main st SE.
Back of the movement to close up these disreputable houses are the flour mill companies, who say that their property has depreciated and is depreciating on account of unsavory character of 1st st S. The reason of the removal of the retail office of the North Star Woolen Mill Company, formerly on 2d st and 3d av S, was because of the proposed summary action of the Northern Pacific people. The action is thought by some to indicate an early commencement of work on the long talked of union depot.
