CONSTABLE CAINES TAKES UP THE CARPET
Court Officer Has to Perform Part of Family Man.
Constable Arthur Caines yesterday went to the home of Mrs. Samuel Pearson, 609 Canada street, moved the furniture out of one of the rooms and then proceeded to take up the carpet, which he carried away with him.
It was with much difficulty that Constable Caine secured possession of the carpet, which had been replevined by Miss Jennie Howard, who had formerly occupied a room at the Pearson home.
Mrs. Pearson says the carpet was being held for a debt of $7.60, $7 of which was for board and 60 cents for car fare expended by Mrs. Pearson in visiting Miss Howard while the latter was ill at the city hospital. Miss Howard had furnished her own room at the Pearson home, and when she secured another place to live, she was refused the carpet until all differences were settled. She brought proceedings in Justice Hoff's court and replevined the carpet, which is now in the possession of the justice, pending a hearing, which is set for next week.
Another similar case in which Constable Caines figured yesterday was that of Mrs. Katie Renkin against Alma Zeno, of 232 West Fifth street. At the request of Mrs. Renkin, who brought replevin proceedings, Constable Caines went to the Zeno home and took possession of a couch and a lady's straw hat, trimmed with artificial cherries. Mrs. Renkin boarded with the Zeno family, and because she left without giving thirty days notice, her goods were held for board. The case will be heard March 13.
