A Gruesome Discovery
A gruesome discovery was brought to light near Baudett last week when the remains of an old fort was discovered fifty miles north of that place on the shores of Lake of the Woods. It is now more than two hundred years since an expedition of two hundred soldiers and traders set out from Quebec and plunging into the trackless forest swarming with wild Indians wound their weary way to their grave on the Lake of the woods. The little band of hunters was never heard from more. That was something more than two hundred years ago. Last week the dilapidated stockade was found by a party of cruisers and inside the ramparts lay the skeletons of the men who had left Quebec in such high spirits two centuries ago. They were evidently slain in a battle with the Indians. The expedition was sent out under the direction of the Catholic church and hundreds of scouts have been sent out at different times since their dissapearance [sic] to learn something of their fate. The skeletons were lying together where they had evidently made their last stand, fighting to the death with a heroism worthy of Custer's men. Thus is uncovered another secret of the wilderness, whose shaggy boughs have been witness to many a grim tragedy during the quiet lapse of the ages.
