Minnesota Tales

The Watab Reveille, January 13, 1851, p. 2

COMMUNICATED.

Believing in the fact that there is a point beyond which "forbearance ceases to be a virtue," I gladly take advantage of the advent of the "Reveille" to exhibit to the public some of the wrongs done to our county, since the organization of the Territory.

The two lower houses of the Legislature seem to be entirely ignorant of the fact, that there is any other place in Minnesota beside St. Paul, and two other small places, called St. Anthony and Stillwater; and their ignorance extends to the federal Government. But it is now devoutly hoped that your paper will enlighten those gentlemen, as well as Uncle Sam, in regard to the extent of the country, and open their eyes to the fact, that there are more than two counties in the Territory.

Our respected Uncle has made provisions for various public works, but misguided by interesting counsel, he has permitted it to be swallowed up before it reached us. A large appropriation for roads was kindly granted the Territory by our aforesaid relative, but what is done with it? It is represented to him that the Sioux Indians need some bridges over their streams, and some of their hills require grading to enable them comfortably to chase the deer and bear. These must be completed first, and the prospect for us is, that we must wait for our share a year or two, and then be told that the money is all gone. So it is with every thing - all is stopped below us.

We now appeal to the people of St. Paul and the two Lower Houses of the Legislature to do us justice, and to this end I would suggest that a bill be introduced in the Third House to provide each of the members of the other branches of the Legislature with a copy of Copperwaite's map of Minnesota, now for sale at any of the Bookstores at Watab City, Benton county.

   More anon.

JUSTICE.
