FIREMEN BURNED, WOMAN IS SAVED Big Rooming House Is Gutted by Flames - Pet Dog Is Rescued. Two firemen were burned, one woman fainted and was carried from the house and five families and three men boarders lost all their personal effects today in a fire which gutted a three-story frame house at 1815 Hawthorne avenue N. The house was conducted as a rooming house by Mrs. M. C. School. The damage to the property is estimated at $5,000, the loss to roomers at about $1,000. When firemen arrived on the scene the fire had gained much headway. William Marden of No. 1 engine house was burned on the face and hands when flames burst through a second story window as he was mounting a ladder. William O'Dea of the auto auxiliary of Station A was slightly burned when he entered the house. Mrs. Charles Catlin, one of the roomers, fainted when she learned the house was afire and was carried from the house by a roomer. Fireman David Leclaire of No. 10 company distinguished himself by rescuing a Scotch terrier dog from the second floor of the burning house. To save the main school building from destruction firemen early today fought for two hours a fire in the Whittier annex, Blaisdell avenue and Twenty-sixth street. The blaze started in the coal bin in the basement of the annex and crept through the partitions of the building. The damage will amount to about $700. |
