Narrow Escape.

While Mr. Ward, the late popular clerk at the Winslow House, was driving up Jackson street yesterday morning, the horse became frightened at a pile of hides in front of Colter's block, and making a desperate plunge forward, the carriage struck a dray, throwing out Mr. W. and a lady accompanying him. They both reached terra firma, however, without receiving any damage; the carriage was considerably broken.

We have on several occasions noticed large heaps of skins projecting into the street at this point, and horses are liable to start upon discovering such objects. If these pelts must be placed in such a prominent position, the owner would confer a favor upon the public by locating them a little to one side and not on the middle of the street.

A horse started in St. Anthony street yesterday and after running around one or two squares brought up safely and comfortably in the middle of a ditch, where he was secured and pacified.
