SHOT BY A GUARD.

A Workhouse Prisoner Shot and Dangerusly Wounded.

Chas. Chester, a prisoner at the workhouse, was shot by one of the guards named Klingersmith yesterday morning, and very dangerously wounded. Chester was a sixty day's man, having been committed something like a month ago for drunkenness and disorderly conduct. It is said that he had not given the authorities any trouble until yesterday morning. About 10 o'clock, while at work in the field a short distance from the workhouse, Chester made an attempt to escape. The poor wretch had only run a short distance when he was detected by the guard who pursued him and ordered him to stop. The order to halt was given three times, as required by the law, and on refusing to obey the mandate, the guard raised his rifle and fired.

Chester fell to the ground, the ball having entered his thigh from the rear, and passed clear through his body, coming out at the groin. He was conveyed to the workhouse hospital, where Dr. Talbot Jones was called.

The latter made an examination of the wounds and pronounced them very serious, although a hope existed that he may recover.
