THE NEW TELEPHONE.

The Test This Afternoon - A Talk of 14 Miles Between Minneapolis and Minnetonka Mills.

The first experimental test of the Baxter telephone in Minneapolis was made this afternoon. A wire running from the office of Fletcher & Loring, in Minneapolis, to Minnetonka Mills, was used. Mr. Kinsler operated the lake end of the wire, and Mr. Freeman that in the city. A reporter for THE JOURNAL dropped into the office of Fletcher & Loring and in an ordinary tone of voice called over the wire, asking who was at the other end of the line, and what the result of the test thus far had been. Mr. Kinsler, who did not [know] the reporter was to be present, called the reporter by name, recognizing the voice from a single previous interview, and asked that the conversation be cautioned a few minutes in order to judge as to the merits of the system. This was done to the perfect satisfaction of the scribe, despite the fact that other wires in the city were evidently "crossed" with this one, and telegraph instruments at the lake, and could not be heard in operation. Conversation was carried on from across the room, with backs to the microphones, and in a whisper all of which could be distinctly heard.
