Chess Players Contest In Annual Tournament


W. E. Hill, of Minneapolis, Wins First in Championship Division.


C. E. Lennan Chosen President at Business Meeting of Association.


The sixteenth annual meeting and tournament of the Minnesota State Chess association was held at the rooms of the Minneapolis Chess club, 412 Nicollet avenue, yesterday, with a total attendance of 36 players. The election of officers resulted as follows:

President, C. E. Lennan, Minneapolis; vice president, H. H. Luce, Owatonna; secretary, A. D. Sturley, St. Paul; treasurer, I. A. Herrick, Minneapolis. The adjudicating committee is composed of Dr. F. A. Huxmann, E. P. Elliott and J. Harris. T. J. Buford was elected tournament director. The officers of the association, with the additions of E. P Elliott will constitute the executive committee.

The players were divided into two classes for the championship and minor tourneys. The championship tournament was won by W. E. Hill of Minneapolis with four victories and no defeats. H. A. Hageman, E. P. Elliott, F. A. Huxmann and F. M. Stacy, all of Minneapolis were tied for second place with three wins and one loss. In the minor tournament H. H. Luce of Owatonna won first prize with three victories and no defeats. R. M. Brockman of St. Paul was second and third, fourth and fifth prizes were divided by T. H. Eggen, J. H. Clark, L. G. Ringstrom, J. Nelson, G. S. Davis and W. S. Rhame, all of Minneapolis.

White Bear and Hopkins were represented in the tournament in addition to Minneapolis, St. Paul and Owatonna.

The retiring president, T. J. Buford, offered two sets of chessmen as prizes for the most brilliant games in both the championship and minor tourneys and the American Chess Bulletin offered a year's subscription for the finest game in the championship class. The winners of these prizes will be determined and announced after the adjudicating committee has time to examine and the games submitted.
