Pretty cottage bedroom curtains can be made of Brussels net with roses and green foliage from cretonne appliqued on them.

An upholsterer's needle will prove very useful to keep in the sewing table drawer. Chair buttons, couch buttons, etc., can be easily replaced by the housekeeper. Even mattresses can be fixed after a little experience.

One woman, whose shirt waists wear through in the back between the shoulders, while the fronts are still good, finds it economy to put new backs in. In the same way, sleeves that go through are renewed, and thus the usefulness of embroidered and lace trimmed fronts is prolonged by many months.

To hemstitch on the machine, draw as many threads as desired and fold over the edge in the center of the drawn threads. Let the tension be loose and stitch as near the edge of the hem as possible. Pull out the bastings, take in goods in one hand and the hem in the other, pull the edge of the hem to the bottom of the drawn threads and the work is finished. Tucks may be hemstitched in the same way.
