PLUMBERS TAKE TESTS SEVENTY-FIVE MEN APPEAR TO QUALIFY AS LICENSED MECHANICS. The threats of the board of plumbing inspectors to prosecute all men found engaged in plumbing work who have not the regular certificates of competency issued by the city, bore fruit today when seventy-five men appeared to take the examination which they must pass before receiving their cards. Plumbing Inspectator John Mullane and William R. Young, secretary of the board, were in charge. They figure that not more than half of the seventy-five will pass. They base this estimate on past experiences. Many of those who took the examination today took it before and failed. Mr. Mullane thinks it probable that another examination will have to be held later as the council committee rooms could not accomodate all who applied today. After everyone is given a chance, Mr. Young says arrests will be made if those not holding certificates attempt to do work. "The city card of competency is not a union card and has nothing to do with the unions," said Mr. Mullane. "It is a municipal card and must be signed by William R. Young. The department will be greatly assisted if all persons who employ plumbers demand to see this card and if it is not forthcoming, report to the plumbing inspector's office." |
