East Side Parks. The Park Commission have selected as one of the East Side parks, block two of St. Anthony Falls. It lies between Ninth and Tenth avenues S., and Fourth and Fifth streets. We consider this a very wise selection, but we also think the area too small. Why not take block three adjoining and make a handsome park. This is one of the finest sites for a park in the city, and should be bought while prices are reasonable. Of course some will object on account of the Marcy school being located on block three, but this is not a valid objection as the school (if it should become a nuisance) could be condemned and utilized as an art gallery or other ornamental purpose. Nature has made this very beautiful, and the Park Commission by a judicious outlay could embellish it and make it one of the most attractive spots in the city. We congratulate the citizens of the East Side on this selection. Another fine site for an East park is the block on which the Winthrop school is located. This is central; the school could be used as a public library and made attractive for young men who would go there to spend their evenings instead of partronizing saloons, etc. We think it would be a wise plan for the city to turn this property over to the Commission and let them lay it out as a park; in that way our citizens could get a very handsome centrally located park without further taxation, and also a very fine library building. |
