The St. Paul Daily Globe, April 27, 1885, p. 2

The Firemen.

Acting Lieutenant Owen Mulgrew of the No. 2 company is off on a seven days' leave.

William Peel has been appointed to the engineership of No. 3.

David Hennessey has been transferred from No. 3. to Engine Company No. 2, where he will act as third pipeman.

The No. 4s have completed their new barn, the work being done within the company.

Jerry Donahue and William O'Neil, two Minneapolis firemen, were in the city yesterday visiting their acquaintances in the St. Paul department.

Engine Company No. 1 complain of having had no run for over a week.

The fire laddies are great on nicknames, their horses and companions always having some familiar soubriquet. Henry Meyerding is the latest victim and now answers to the musical title of "Bones."

A delegation of twelve St. Paul firemen are planning a visit to their Minneapolis brethren to take place the latter part of the week.

Steps are being taken to provide better manhole covers, a move that will give firemen a sense of security in running to fires which they do not now enjoy.

The department hose was all tested last Friday. under the direction of Assistant Chief Jackson and a detail from No. 6 company. A pressure of 140 pounds was applied.

The fireplugs were opened up Friday night and the deposit which collects in the plugs was thereby washed out.

The new fire engine to be placed in the city will probably go to headquarters, and the chemical now there will be removed farther out of the business center.

P. Churchill, an old engineer formerly with No. 3, will pursue another avocation.

The fire commissioners will meet tonight.

No. 1 will not get the swinging harness in place until after the arrival of the new hose carriages, one of which will be assigned to that company.
